Why must Linz and Linz-Land be separated?
Stadt Linz lists the Standesamt Magistrata as the place to report deaths occurring in the city. Linz-Land is a separate political district governed by the Bezirkshauptmannschaft. A hospital or home with a postal address in the area therefore does not automatically belong to the city case.
This separation determines where the civil-status record is created and to which authority the subsequent request is submitted. It is not checked by the family's place of residence, but by the recorded location of death and the location of the deceased. The precise institutional address is the basic information, and the name Linz without the municipality can lead to the wrong office.
How does Upper Austria manage the Leichenpass?
The Upper Austrian portal describes the international Leichenpass and the territorially competent administrative authority. In a statutory city, this function is performed by the Magistrat; outside the city, the relevant Bezirkshauptmannschaft acts. The Austrian federal portal confirms that competence follows the recorded place of death.
The multilingual document is based on medical and registry documentation and states the final destination. It does not grant the right of admission to Serbia or another country in the region. For this purpose, a destination-country permit is obtained according to a special official instruction.
Which authority issues each document in Linz?
The table refers to death occurring in the statutory city. For Linz-Land, the local administrative authority changes, so the address is checked before the request.
| Document | Issuing authority | Role in the case |
|---|---|---|
| Medical certificate | doctor | provides grounds for reporting death |
| Sterbeurkunde | Standesamt of the Magistrat Linz | records the death in the city's civil register |
| Leichenpass | territorially competent administrative service | authorises international funeral transfer from Austria |
| Destination-country accompanying document | competent mission of the destination country | confirms entry to the destination |
How is the Austrian document aligned with the destination requirements?
Serbia, BiH, Croatia and Montenegro do not use a single common destination-country permit. Each country determines the competent diplomatic mission and supporting documents. The Austrian document must state the same name and final destination as the destination-country permit, so the receiving city is confirmed before the request is concluded.
For Croatia, the two countries' EU membership does not remove funeral-document requirements. The relevant Bosnian or Montenegrin mission must be identified when burial is in either of those countries. For Serbia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes the sprovodnica requirements. Completion means meeting both countries' rules, not treating their legal systems as identical.
What should be submitted in order to choose the right authority?
The passport of the deceased, name of the institution, street, postcode, municipality, information on the death report, receiving city and telephone number are required. Based on the municipality, the Magistrat Linz is separated from the Bezirkshauptmannschaft Linz-Land. This is more important than the informal description that the institution is located "near Linz".
An initial response is provided within 10 minutes. We collect routine documents without a separate handling fee. Arrival within 48 hours is planned when there are no special official holds and when the Leichenpass and the sprovodnica have been issued. Fees charged by authorities or other institutions are paid according to their actual invoice.
How are possible transit countries described without fixing a route?
From Upper Austria, the continuation according to the region may include Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia or another combination according to the place of handover. Neither variant is presented as a permanent route. A legal check follows the actual plan before departure.
The public explanation therefore focuses on the competent Magistrat or Bezirkshauptmannschaft, the Leichenpass and official clearance. These points are verifiable and directly affect lawful departure.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Linz Magistrat also handle a case from Linz-Land?
Not necessarily. The district has a separate Bezirkshauptmannschaft, so jurisdiction is checked by address.
Who reports a death occurring in the city of Linz?
The principal civil-registration stage is handled by the Standesamt within the Linz Magistrat on the basis of the prescribed medical report.
Is the Austrian Leichenpass multilingual?
Austrian state and provincial sources describe a document intended for international use in several languages.
Does the Leichenpass replace the confirmation of the country of destination?
No. The Austrian document accompanies outward transport. Any additional document required by the receiving state concerns admission and the intended place of burial.
When does the stated timeframe from Linz begin?
It applies once the correct territorial authority is confirmed, the deceased has been officially released and both international documents are complete.
