What makes an Austrian case file ready for review?

Record the full institution, town and province, identity, registration status, any official restriction, and the country and town of burial. A cropped image of a form’s heading is inadequate: the issuer, signature, date and relation between pages must be visible before its function can be classified.

Fenjer Bestattung does not charge a separate handling fee for routine document collection. The approved arrival period of up to 48 hours applies to a straightforward case after public release. A post-mortem examination, prosecutorial review or missing original can postpone the point from which the operational timetable starts. Fees charged by authorities or other institutions are paid according to their actual invoice.

Which destination country is intended?

Serbia links its sprovodnica to the Austrian outward document. For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the burial territory is also needed to identify the receiving procedure. Croatia treats a body and an urn separately, while Montenegro publishes its own entry and transit guidance. The linked routes explain those differences specifically for a collection in Austria.

Which Austrian authority controls an international departure?

Austria’s federal portal assigns outward transfers to the district administrative authority of the place of death in most provinces. A statutory city acts through its Magistrat; elsewhere the Bezirkshauptmannschaft performs that function. The relatives’ home address does not select the office. For this usual arrangement, the place of death establishes the office; the applicable provincial rule must still be checked to determine the submission route and the authority issuing the Leichenpass.

Moving the deceased between Austrian facilities is not equivalent to authorisation for an international journey. Identity, registration, release and destination must be connected in the outward document before departure. Administrative charges and filing methods may vary, so the current information of the actual office is checked rather than a checklist borrowed from another province.

Why should Vienna and Salzburg be examined separately?

Vienna links international applications to the hygiene centre of the municipal health service and records particulars including identity, death, collection point, destination, coffin and method of carriage. Salzburg separates collection of civil-status papers from the health service’s accompanying record. A shared document title therefore sits above different municipal workflows.

Stating Austria alone leaves the main jurisdictional question unanswered. The district, holding institution and present location show whether Vienna’s, Salzburg’s or another provincial arrangement applies. Where police, a prosecutor or another investigating body is involved, the administrative stage cannot be treated as complete until that authority releases the deceased.

What must be added to an Austrian Leichenpass?

The Leichenpass evidences Austrian outward authority; it does not grant entry into the country of burial. Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro each publish a separate consular process. The cemetery or other receiving institution should be established before destination details are repeated across several official forms.

A death certificate, medical record and passport retain separate evidential roles. Neither geographical proximity nor participation in European travel arrangements removes a sprovodnica or equivalent destination requirement. During file review, the original heading and issuing body are retained because a loose English rendering of Leichenpass cannot prove what a public office has authorised.

How can the onward corridor be explained without unsafe promises?

Austria links central European collection points with several south-eastern destination areas. Vienna may naturally connect with the eastern part of the road network, while Salzburg, Tyrol or Carinthia can make a southern alignment more relevant. No fixed course is published because the receiving city, validity of papers and current traffic conditions must be considered together.

The TEN-T framework describes connected nodes rather than one guaranteed itinerary. A Croatian destination presents a different administrative endpoint from Serbia or Montenegro. Public copy therefore identifies possible transit countries only at a high level and deliberately omits distance, driving duration and named border posts.

Process for this case

  1. Step 1 of 5

    Locate the competent office

The competent Magistrat or Bezirkshauptmannschaft is identified from the actual place of death and the public body competent for that district.

  2. Step 2 of 5

    Reconcile the official records

The civil death record and medical release are compared by issuer, date and matching personal particulars.

  3. Step 3 of 5

    Validate outward authority

The multilingual Leichenpass must connect the identified deceased, official clearance and stated country of destination.

  4. Step 4 of 5

    Complete destination papers

The destination document is prepared separately under the current consular instructions of the receiving state.

  5. Step 5 of 5

    Record the handover

The outward record and destination permit remain with the deceased until delivery at the confirmed receiving address.

Frequently asked questions

Who issues a Leichenpass in Austria?

Depending on the place of death, competence lies with a district authority, a Magistrat or the relevant body of a statutory city.

Is the Austrian Leichenpass multilingual?

Austria’s federal guidance expressly describes a multilingual document for outward transport.

Does Vienna’s procedure also apply in Salzburg?

No. The two cities publish different responsible offices and filing arrangements.

Can a Leichenpass replace a sprovodnica?

No. Austrian outward permission and the receiving state’s entry paper perform separate legal functions.

Which locations must be confirmed before filing?

The place of death, current holding address and exact receiving point in the destination state must be clear.

What changes if an authority is investigating?

The responsible police, prosecutor or health body controls release; a private appointment cannot override that decision.

When can the 48-hour arrival period apply?

It applies once the official file, required originals and receiving arrangements are complete.
