What functions does the coffin perform during repatriation?
It protects dignity, identity, hygiene and safe handling through the chain. The outer wooden coffin, possible metal inner enclosure, absorbent material, sealing and restraint perform different tasks. Decorative choice and technical transport function should be separated in a quotation so that the family can identify what is required and what is selected.
Construction is not chosen solely from distance or destination name. Cause of death, mode, departure law, transit and destination rules may matter. An existing coffin can remain suitable if the competent bodies accept it, but its appearance does not prove impermeability or the required internal arrangement.
Which constructions are described by Article 6 of ETS 080?
The Agreement requires an impervious coffin containing absorbent material. One described option uses an outer wooden coffin with sides at least twenty millimetres thick and a carefully soldered zinc inner coffin or comparable self-destroying material. The alternative is a stronger single wooden coffin lined with zinc or the comparable material.
Those dimensions are cited only within the explained treaty setting, not offered as universal product advice. Article 6 also provides an antiseptic-impregnated shroud where death resulted from a contagious disease. The departure authority checks compliance, while a destination outside the treaty can apply its domestic system.
| Component | Function | Source of requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Outer wooden coffin | Strength and dignified external form | Treaty, national law and appointment |
| Metal inner enclosure | Impervious internal protection | Law governing the actual movement |
| Absorbent material | Manages possible fluid | ETS 080 and health requirements |
| Closure declaration | Records compliant placement and sealing | Issuing authority’s procedure |
| Pressure device or resistance | Air-carriage safeguard | Authority and airline |
| Outer cargo packaging | Safe and discreet handling | Carrier and treaty conditions |
Is a metal inner coffin mandatory at every border?
That statement is too broad. ETS 080 describes a metal or comparable lining within its treaty scope. Bavarian law contains its own coffin provisions, and other states or carriers may recognise different solutions. The legal basis applying to the particular movement matters more than a general marketing claim about every border.
A quotation should show whether the metal component follows a public requirement, destination rule or selected equipment. The metal inner coffin costs €50. The family chooses the wooden model, with confirmed prices starting at €320.
What is added for air carriage?
Article 6 refers to pressure balancing or resistance accepted as adequate for air transport. The airline also checks dimensions, weight, outer packaging, marking and cargo intake. A public transport pass and carrier acceptance are different layers, both of which must be settled before terminal delivery.
IATA material supports standardised, respectful handling but does not replace conditions of the selected flight. Changing airline or connection can lead to a fresh acceptance review. Air suitability should therefore not be presented as a permanent property of every closed coffin.
Which equipment decisions belong to the family?
The family can select the model and external finish of the wooden coffin within the confirmed technical requirements. Religious symbols and personal items are considered with the destination and final disposition. ETS 080 limits contents to the deceased and personal effects intended to be buried or cremated with them.
A transparent choice distinguishes a mandatory component, technical alternative and optional preference. Price, material, availability and suitability are confirmed before closure. A catalogue image alone does not prove that a model is accepted for the specific international movement.
How is the suitability of a repatriation coffin documented?
A compliance file links the actual coffin with the deceased and the intended mode of carriage. It records manufacturer or supplier, materials, dimensions, closure method and the statement of the person completing the work. If a metal liner is used, describe its function precisely; the phrase zinc coffin alone proves neither construction nor impermeability.
Compare departure, transit and destination requirements with any carrier acceptance rules. ETS 080 describes an impervious coffin, absorbent material and specified inner and outer construction. Bavarian law contains its own coffin conditions. Air transport may add pressure and handling requirements.
Complete the review before final closure. Missing identification, conflicting dimensions or an unexplained technical statement becomes harder to correct after sealing. Photographs can record condition, but they do not replace a required certificate or official inspection.
What is not automatically part of mandatory technical equipment?
Religious symbols, textiles, handles, decoration and the family’s chosen wooden model concern dignity and preference. Keep them separate from an inner construction required by law or a carrier. An aesthetic choice cannot conceal or alter a technical condition.
Hygienic care and dressing are also separate services. A coffin’s availability does not prove that personal care was carried out. An itemised record prevents equipment, care and transport packaging from becoming one undefined bundle.
What is checked when technical equipment is handed over?
Review identity marking, external condition, closure, consistency with the declaration and the carrier’s handling requirement. Record damage or a disturbed seal before acceptance.
The recipient confirms its own handover, not every legal condition in the abstract. Public documents and technical evidence therefore remain in the file even where physical reception raises no objection.

Frequently asked questions
Is zinc lining always required by one European rule?
No. Treaty scope, national law and carrier conditions must be checked for the actual movement.
What core safeguards does ETS 080 state?
Impervious containment, absorbent material and one of its described protective constructions.
Why does air transport add technical checks?
Pressure conditions, cargo handling and carrier acceptance create additional safeguards.
Can the family select the wooden coffin?
Yes, within the confirmed technical requirements. The family selects the model, with wooden coffins starting at €320.
May personal items be enclosed?
Under ETS 080, only effects intended for burial or cremation with the deceased are contemplated.
