Repatriation from Sweden to Bosnia and Herzegovina

For repatriation from Sweden to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the consular file must identify the intended burial area. Official guidance distinguishes area-specific forms and requires evidence of a secured burial place. Sweden’s passersedel follows its own release and coffin conditions; naming an overseas destination alone does not fulfil them.

Which destination area does the application need to identify?

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s published consular instructions distinguish supporting forms for the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska and Brčko District. The planned burial area therefore matters alongside the general application. A Swedish residential address does not answer which of these destination-specific forms belongs in the receiving file.

The instructions also call for confirmation of a secured burial place from a relevant funeral or religious institution. This demonstrates an actual provision for burial, rather than an informal wish expressed by relatives. Skatteverket does not issue that local destination evidence as part of its Swedish departure function.

How do the supporting documents divide between the two countries?

The receiving-country list identifies a death certificate, medical evidence concerning the stated infection status, foreign transport permission and identity or citizenship material. Area-specific information adds to these requirements. Selecting the correct regional form does not make a missing medical document unnecessary, nor does the burial-place certificate become permission to depart Sweden.

Swedish reporting itself contains two distinct medical documents. Socialstyrelsen describes the dödsbevis and the dödsorsaksintyg with their separate recipients. Whether an existing record meets the receiving checklist depends on what it actually certifies. Its Swedish title cannot establish, by itself, that it supplies the required health statement.

Why does Sweden need more than the destination’s name?

A passersedel depends on eligibility for the Swedish burial or cremation certificate. The ordinance also requires an undertaker’s statement covering the prescribed coffin conditions and permitted contents. These are substantive departure prerequisites, not merely address fields. An established burial location abroad cannot stand in for those requirements.

The Burial Act identifies when police involvement is necessary because a forensic examination may be justified. Its reporting and permission provisions remain relevant to the Swedish certificate. A family’s completed overseas arrangements do not authorise Skatteverket to treat a still-required police decision as already given.

How can the right Swedish document be recognised abroad?

The ordinance provides a Swedish and English or Swedish and French passersedel. Retaining the original name makes it possible to identify this particular document within a multilingual file. Calling every paper a certificate without further explanation would blur the distinction between the medical reports and the international departure document.

Efterlevandeguiden, the joint Swedish agencies’ guide, assigns ordering that outward coffin document to the person performing the transport. This does not determine the competent Bosnian-Herzegovinian mission. The official consular instructions used here establish document requirements; their place of publication is not treated as jurisdiction over every case arising in Sweden.

When is the ordinary consular application insufficient?

The receiving-country guidance lists separate circumstances, including foreign nationals, infectious causes of death and remains that have previously been buried or cremated. It describes additional approval by the competent authorities for these categories. The prior condition of the remains and the person’s status therefore need accurate classification.

Sweden also recognises a distinct obstacle where mediation over cremation or burial is known to Skatteverket. The relevant certificate must await final resolution of that dispute under the Act. An overseas destination does not settle a disagreement between relatives or bypass a special decision required by the receiving country.

Process for this case

  1. Step 1 of 4

    Establish the receiving area

Identify the actual burial territory and place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Match the general application with its area-specific form and distinguish both from the local burial-place confirmation.

  2. Step 2 of 4

    Read the medical evidence accurately

Identify the contents and recipient of each Swedish medical report. Then compare the actual health information with the consular requirement, rather than assuming equivalence from a translated document name.

  3. Step 3 of 4

    Complete the Swedish conditions

The release basis and required coffin declaration must support the passersedel application. Where police permission forms part of that basis, it remains a separate official decision.

  4. Step 4 of 4

    Classify any exceptional circumstances

Check whether the case falls within a special category in the receiving-country guidance. Previously buried remains, for example, require the described additional approval rather than unmodified ordinary paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

Does Skatteverket select the appropriate BiH area form?

That form belongs to the receiving country’s consular procedure. Skatteverket handles the Swedish passersedel; it does not use that function to confirm a local burial provision in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Can the family’s preferred town serve as the required burial-place evidence?

The consular instructions call for institutional confirmation of a secured place. A preferred town expresses an intention, but is not the same evidence as the specified confirmation from the appropriate institution.

Does a Swedish death notification automatically satisfy the BiH medical requirement?

The actual statement must be compared with what the receiving checklist requires. Swedish medical reports serve distinct purposes. Similar translated labels do not prove that a particular record contains the required health information.

Is the Swedish-only Nordic form applicable to a Bosnian-Herzegovinian destination?

The ordinance limits that language exception to the expressly named Nordic destinations. The ordinary bilingual passersedel provision remains relevant to the departure discussed on this page.

Can a dispute about cremation affect the Swedish certificate?

Where Skatteverket knows that the statutory mediation process is involved, the Act ties issue of the relevant certificate to final resolution. An international burial plan does not itself resolve the dispute.

Why must an earlier burial be disclosed in the receiving application?

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s guidance treats previously buried remains as a special circumstance involving additional approval. Their prior status therefore affects the process and cannot be omitted as an incidental detail.
